Representative animation showing the oil’s path through a four-stroke gasoline engine. Not all engines look like this and/or include the parts illustrated here.

Lubricating oil is an indispensable element for the engine to function correctly. It’s impossible to imagine an engine without a fluid lubricating its moving parts.

Inside the engine, the oil circulates through an intricate system to reach not only the pistons, but also the crankshaft, camshaft, and even the turbocharger, if there is one.

Oil performs different jobs within the lubrication system.
1. It lubricates and protects against wear
2. It disperses heat
3. It cleans
4. It disperses combustion impurities to keep sludge from forming in the oil pan or sump.
